On the 24th and 25th of October, Minister of National Defence, João Gomes Cravinho, attended the meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence in Brussels.

On the first day of the meeting, the North Atlantic Council addressed several topics, in particular, the current security environment, the situation in Syria, maritime operations and the fight against hybrid threats.

On the second day, the debate focused on burden sharing, deterrence and defence and the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. According to the Minister of National Defence, the Allies discussed the major geostrategic challenges, as well as the guiding documents that NATO is developing for the coming years.

Regarding the situation in Syria, the Minister of National Defence said, “as expected, there was a great convergence, except for the position of Turkey, which faced some isolation, and which sought to explain its point of view on Syria. But there were repeated calls on Turkey to cease hostilities and withdraw its forces from Syria"

One of the objectives of this ministerial was the preparation of the NATO Leaders Meeting, scheduled for the 3rd and 4th of December, in London, which marks the 70th anniversary of the Atlantic Alliance.
