On October 15 and 17, in a ceremony at Palácio de Belém, conducted by His Excellency the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, took office the new Ministry of Defence Team.
João Titterington Gomes Cravinho, the new Minister of National Defence, was born in Lisbon in June 1964. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oxford, a Master's degree in World Economy Policy and a Degree in International Relations, both from the London School of Economics. From 2015 until the present, he served as European Union Ambassador to Brazil, having previously held the same position in India between 2011 and 2015.
Between March 2005 and June 2011, João Gomes Cravinho was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Author of a book entitled Visions of the World (2002), he also published numerous articles in specialized academic journals and newspapers on topics related to Defence Policy, Cooperation and International Relations.
Ana Santos Pinto, new Secretary of State for National Defence, was born in Lisbon in December 1978. She holds a PhD in International Relations from NOVA University in Lisbon, a Master's Degree in History of International Relations from ISCTE- IUL and a Degree in Political Science and International Relations also from the NOVA University.
Her main areas of research are International Policy Identities, European Union, Foreign and Security Policy, as well as Middle East Geopolitics. Moreover, she collaborates regularly with social media.
Among other professional activities, Ana Santos Pinto served as Research Consultant for the United Nations Organization in the Alliance of Civilizations Project (2008-2010), she was also Advisor for International Relations of the Minister of National Defence of the XVII Constitutional Government (2006-2009) and Research Assistant at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (2001-2003).
