Portugal hosted the 9th Edition of REP19
From the 11th until the 27th of September, Portugal hosted the 9th Edition of the Recognised Environmental Picture (REP19) organized by NATO, in Sesimbra and Tróia. The goal of this exercise was to test maritime unmanned systems, as well as the capacity to gather and analyse the information provided by them.
In addition to the Portuguese Navy, 6 Allied countries participated in this exercise: Belgium, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, United States and Turkey. The NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation and the “Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS)” of Porto University also participated in REP19, as well as several guest from multiple countries.
With roughly 8000 people involved, this exercise also allowed the study of aquatic communications, and how they can be improved. Through information sharing, cooperation and joint work the Allies hope to improve the effectiveness of their maritime capabilities, especially unmanned systems, as stated at the Brussels Summit in 2018.
