The Portuguese Navy frigate “D. Francisco de Almeida” left for a NATO Mission in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. It will be part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) until November 12th.
The primary function of the SNMGs is to provide NATO with a permanent and immediately available naval capability to conduct NATO Response Force (NRF) and non-NRF operations, as well as to intervene in a broad spectrum of military operations.
During this mission, the frigate will integrate the US Navy “2nd Carrier Strike Group”, will participate in an international exercise in Canada, in the High Readiness Force Maritime certification exercise and in the NATO Electronic Warfare and Missile Defense exercise.
The frigate “D. Francisco de Almeida” is commanded by Frigate Captain Ricardo José Gomes da Silva Inácio and has crew of 174 military personnel. At the farewell ceremony, the Minister of Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, whished a good mission to all the personnel.
