On 19th October the new Chief of Staff of the Army (CEME), Lieutenant-General José Nunes da Fonseca, was officially sworn in.
The former Second Commander-in-Chief of the Republican National Guard (GNR), was sworn in by His Excellency the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a ceremony that took place in Palácio de Belém.
General Nunes da Fonseca was stationed at the Allied Force Command, in Madrid, from 2010 to 2013. Beforehand, he was stationed as General-Commander of the Logistics Force under the NATO Special Force for Kosovo, in 2011; and as Operations Officer, between 1998 and 1999, in the Stabilization Force of the Alliance for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, from 1995 to 1999, General Nunes da Fonseca was also in command of EUROFOR (European Rapid Operational Force) in Italy, as Deputy Logistics Operations and Head of the Operational Procedures Section.
