Our mission is to represent the Portuguese State in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and to ensure the defence of national interests through a negotiating process of compromise.
NATO decisions are taken by consensus by the Allied countries in the different Committees, with the North Atlantic Council (NAC), in its different formats, being the ultimate exponent.
The members of the Permanent Delegation participate actively in the activities of the multiple Committees that determine the work of the Organization and are intended to ensure the defence and security of the Alliance. This work is carried out in close cooperation with the Public Administration and Military Authorities in order to convey and defend national positions.
In its normal activity, the Council meets in the form of Permanent Representatives where documents are prepared for subsequent approval in the form of Ministers of Foreign Affairs or Defence or Heads of State and Government.
